Minecraft nga motu

Our inquiry has been about how our tupuna adapted as they settled into their new land after the Waka voyages. We went into the Minecraft world.

What we did in Nga Motu is one of the challenges. I did the vowels lesson because the consonant one was too hard.

I learned vowels can sound long and you can tell if there’s a long vowel or if you find a vowel line above it.

The video below is about one of the challenges in nga motu I completed it.

Counting data with M&Ms

This week we have been sorting data with M&Ms and using tally marks to count the M&Ms.

First, we watched a video about data that taught me about tally marks and pictograms.

I found it easy to count the M&Ms and sort them into their colour groups.

I found it hard to make the tally marks using the mouse pad.

The Ants and the Grasshopper

Our group read The Ants and the Grasshopper.

The story is about the ants doing work to get ready for Winter so they don´t starve. The grasshopper was relaxing in the sun, lazy and doing nothing, and the ants were doing all the hard work.

The lesson from the story was to focus, not be lazy, and plan for the future.

Here are some of my follow-up activitie.

The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch

We were learning about synonyms.

I found it easy to understand what a synonym is.

I found it hard to understand how to switch words by finding their synonym.

What I enjoyed most was listening to the book The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.

Next time what I could do differently is find another word.

Our trip to Te Ahurea

Yesterday all of the junior syndicate went to Te Ahurea in Kerikeri to learn and build our knowledge about our culture.

First, we followed the teachers into the whare waka and we did a karakia.

Then we copied Whaea Soph’s actions and learned a new karakia.

After that, we followed Matua Harry up the hill to Rewa’s Village and learned that the government was trying to bulldoze it down. But a man paid the government to stop so it would be saved.

Next, we went back down the hill to go and learn some games. My favourite was the rakau game because I got better at it as we played more. We had to listen to either maui (left) or matau (right) and let go of the rakau and go to the next person.

I had a really ka pai day and enjoyed the trip to Te Ahurea.
